The Buzz: “No seams. A jaw-slackening demo reel.” - Pitchfork
Must hear: 212
With backing from NME and the BBC, 20 year old New Yorker Azealia Banks is set for an exciting 2012.
Voted number one in the annual NME cool list and top three in the BBC Sound of 2012 poll, Azealia released her 212 EP through Polydor earlier this year. Originally released as a free download, the title track was quickly picked up by the blogosphere, with Pitchfork making it a track of the year despite it only having been released for less than a month.
Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, Nick Grimshaw, Huw Stephens, Rob Da Bank, Lauren Laverne, Mistajam, Ronnie Herel, Sinden, Mary Anne Hobbs and Rich Walters all call themselves fans of Azealia. The minimalist video for 212 is fast approaching 10million views on YouTube.
Annie Mac earlier this year premiered Shady Love, a new single from Polydor labelmates Scissor Sisters, which features a guest vocal from Azealia.
Polydor A&R director Ben Mortimer says, “It’s very rare to meet someone with such an amazing energy as Azealia. She is truly the real deal.”
212 EP is out now and a full length album is expected later this year.
