HowTheLightGetsIn 2014

Next month Universal Music is heading down to HowTheLightGetsIn, the world's largest philosophy and music festival, in Hay-On-Wye.

The past few months we’ve been hitting the road for some more Utalks, visiting schools, universities and youth organisations up and down the country with our panellists ready to discuss pretty much anything about music and the music business.

Utalks at LIPA

Polydor’s head of digital Aaron Bogucki, along with five other Universal Music UK staff, made the trip earlier this week to the Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts for the ninth instalment of the Utalks series.

QPCS app project

Music is represented in the app explosion – Shazam, anyone? – but we can’t help feeling there’s plenty more scope to develop apps with music at their heart. Hence our support for an app-building competition which has just been launched by Queen’s Park Community School, not too far from our London offices.

Utalks at Music For Youth National Festival

Our latest Utalks sessions were a small part of the week-long Music For Youth national festival in Birmingham and we were lucky enough to be invited along on the Friday as part of the Rock, Pop & Urban day at the HMV Institute. All of the attendees were set to perform in the venue that evening and came to pay us a visit between sound checks.

Utalks at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow

Last week a team from Universal Music UK ventured north of the border for the first Utalks session outside London. The event took place just before The Naked and Famous Glasgow show at the ABC. Fiction MD Jim Chancellor and label manager Steve Warby joined Thom Powers and Aaron Short from the band to make up our panel. Corrine McConnachie attended the session and kindly shared her thoughts with us.

Ross Anderson - Creative Director, Polydor

On sitting down in front of 100 students at Goldsmiths College this Monday, my first thought was that they could ask anything, and that frankly made me a bit nervous. Not because we have an skeletons in our cupboard, or have anything to be ashamed of, but just because we haven’t done this before. It’s easy to hide behind what we do ‘because we know best’ – BUT, in this scenario, was it time for us to explain ourselves!?
